Can I do blonde highlights at home?

Hi,
I have long (nearly down to my waist) straight highlighted hair. I usually go to the hairdressers and have highlights, 2 slightly different blonde colours. However, I haven't been since the beginning of November and can't justify the cost (nearly £60) at the moment. My hair is naturally a light mousy colour.
As I am getting desperate  I was thinking about trying to do a few highlights at home, I have no idea what to use though or where to start.! Are there kits you can buy with 2 different colours? I was thinking about trying to use foils. Maybe just start with trying a few and see how it turns out then adding more if it looks ok.
Please help!

I used to buy a kit with a base colour and a highlight kit in for about a tenner. you would do the base then drag the mascara brush applicater thingy through with the highlight colour on. my hair is only shoulder length though. first time i did it it looked great but then you start getting build up. with you having long hair it would be really difficult and you would need 2 kits. Ionly just had enough to do mine in one kit
I ended up getting a mobile hairdresser out. touched lucky, she was an ex regis colour specialist. my hair was almost solid blonde and i grew it out with her making it look good and now. I get a honey/caramel shade and a lighter blonde on top of my own mousey colour
She does half head foils, cut, blow for £35.even when i was growing mine out she seemed to put loads in but was still half a head. if you look on fb for mobile hairdressers in your area you will find one or just google.
By the time you buy the stuff, you may as well get it done properly. I ended up making a right pigs ear of mine, more blonde bombsite than bombshell
It lasts for ages because she gets closer to the roots aswell. no way can you do it the way they can.Shine on you crazy diamond..............0 -
I used to have my (dark blonde) hair regularly highlighted 2 colours of blonde, but due to the price I finally bit the bullet and - after many hours of researching and asking for recommendations - I bought a box of John Freida Precision Foam in Natural Extra Light Blonde 10N.
I now would not go back to using anything else, it is great as it adds the different tones of colour I want into my hair, and even my original highlights look great and blend in perfectly. My hair is also left in good condition, and it is so easy to use. Even my hairdresser keeps comenting on how good my colour looks, when I go in for a cut.
Might be worth a try before trying home highlights? I thought I would never stop having highlights myself, but now I am more than happy to forget the hassle and use the Precision Foam - so much easier, and actually nicer results.0 -
Get a virtually cost price appointment at your nearest college of hairdressing, they are always going to have more knowledge and experience than you and they will be able to get at your head and hair from angles you find impossible. Your hair is also longer than your arms which makes working on yourself challenging.

Hi..
I read this post when it first got put on but was on phone so couldnt respond.. did the OP get it sorted.. i was going to suggest local college too as someone else did.. i am a qualified hairdresser, assessor, colour tech etc and i always do a kind of lemon sucking type motion when i hear about ppl even mildly contemplating doing their own with stuff like this lol .. my hair is to the middle of my back and i go the local college, infact one of the girls that used to work for me is a lecturer there so i know i am in completely safe hands,, cheap as chips,, yes it takes ages but it means i get some me time. love it.0 -
OP, I have done my highlights at home for years. I have long brown hair and use a 5.99 kit made by jerome russell which you can get from boots or bodycare.
I've never had any problems with it and see no reason to use a hairdresser for coluring my hair. Esp when I go for a cut and they say how nice my colour is!! Also my sister used to have foils and hairdressers ruined her hair by over-blonding it. Ended up a frizzy mess. Mine has always stayed highlighted and has never ended up a solid blonde.
Make sure you do a patch test and a strand test so you know how long to leave it on for.
Then just ask a friend or family member to help you pull the strands through. Its quite time consuming esp if you have long hair but probably no longer than foils take.
My hair is in good condition despite years of highlighting. I personally would not pay for foils as I dont really trust anyone else to do my colour and I dont want dye touching my scalp and causing a reaction. (As with a cap it won't touch the scalp, so yes, grows out quicker but I personally prefer that the dye doesnt touch my scalp)0
