Thanks.
Thanks.

Hi Wayne,
When I changed my car,the dealer did it for me.
If not ,you can call DVLA in Coleraine(assuming you are in NI) who can advise what you need to do.

The easiest way to change it is to do the paperwork at your nearest DVA office. That way any they can check the correct documents are there and it's normally a quicker route in my experience.
You need to take registration documents for both cars, insurance, mot certificates and also tax for the donor car and tax for the receipent car or an application for tax. The donor car which is the car with the cherished plate must be taxed and have a valid MOT otherwise they won't change it.
If the receipent car has an English registration number you must ensure that the cherished plate will not make the car appear younger or they won't change it. This isn't normally an issue with NI registered number plates.
I'm sure there is guidance on the website and printable forms if you would prefer to post. The benefit of going to the DVA office is that they will give you a letter explaining this car is involved in a cherished transfer which is always useful if your local traffic warden or psni stop you.
After all that hassle the DVA will send you out new tax discs and MOT discs (if car had mot) with the new registration plate number printed on them. Then you can take the registration documents and get new plates made up to put on your car.
Last time I think the transfer was about £80 ish0 -
Thanks,jjd.
So what reg do they then give the car which the cherished number is coming off?0 -
Any of mine have just reverted back to the plate the car was first registered with.
I'm not sure what happens if the cherished plate was the first registered plate as when I did this it was a trade in and the dealer sorted it. I would assume it would just get the most recent local plate as this is what happens if people choose to get an English reg car changed (not necessary but some people prefer an NI plate).0 -
You need a V317 which you can print http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/@motor/documents/digitalasset/dg_069390.pdf
It's £80 to transfer the reg.
Fill in the V317.
Ok this is off the top of my head so dont quote me but....:
For your current car take the V5, MOT & I normally photocopy the tax disc although there is a box on the V317 to write the tax disc number.
For your new car: Take the V5 fill in the new keeper section on the V5, the MOT & if it's taxed the tax disc. If it's not taxed take some insurance in your name for this vehicle & a cheque of the tax.
They will keep everything for your old car then send you a new V5 with an age appropriate reg number on it which you will then need to give to the dealer if you are part exchanging it & a MOT with the new reg number on it, theres a yellow section on the V5 which you and the dealer will need to fill out to say that it's in the hands of a motor trader, they will also send you a new tax disc which you can give to the dealer or get a refund for the remaining tax left on it, again theres a form on the DVLA think its a V14. For your new car they will send you a new V5 in your name and MOT. They will give you the tax disc over the counter when you take the paperwork so that you can drive it.
If your in Ireland i'm not 100% sure as i'm in England and this is the norm.
Hope that helps.0 -

Hey,
Sorry if this is late.
For a cherished transfer, you'll need the following:
Tax books (V5c) for each car
Tax discs for each car
MOT for each car (if applicable)
Insurance for the receiving vehicle
V317 NI form
£80 fee
The donor vehicle will receive a new number plate from the current series of numbers, you can choose which area you want the number to come from."Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that!"0 -
Thanks guys.
Do I need to get insurance for the new vehicle arranged before I pick it up, with the cherished reg on the policy?
Will I then be able to drive the car off with the new plate on it, or will I have to take it with its current plate and then await the transfer of the cherished plate?0 -
You can't put the cherished reg plate on the car until you receive the amended tax disc and reg documents.
You inform the insurance of the change of reg at this point.
If you change the reg plate before you get the documents your car will not show up correctly on the database and you could have some explaining to do if stopped by the police.0
