Has anyone baked a cake in a Panasonic breadmaker?
Today I baked a coffee and pecan cake following the recipe in the Panasonic 2500 breadmaker manual. The resulting cake was a disappointment.
Firstly it took an extra 40 mins to cook on top of their suggested 1 hour baking time and more worryingly on removing the cake from the liner I found that there was at least 4 tablespoons of molten fat in the bottom of the bread pan.
This is the first time that I have attempted a cake in the breadmaker...... I thought it would be more economical than putting on the main oven just for one cake.
I followed the recipe exactly and lined the bread pan with a non stick liner bought from Lakeland specifically designed for this purpose.
was I just unlucky? or did I do something wrong? Maybe the recipe is at fault?
Just to add that the breadmaker works fine in it's breadmaking capacity

I've tried a banana cake which was a bit of an icky mess but I put in more banana than I should have done so blamed myself. It did take a heck of a lot longer to show signs of being cooked butI put that down to being too sloppy with the extra banana.
I also tried the ginger & apple cake (I think, can't quite remember). It was OK but a bit bread-y according to OH. More dense than the cakes I've baked in the oven and not as nice.
I used the breadmaker when I first got it. At the time I didn't have a proper oven and I was using the microwave combi setting as a basic oven function. The breadmaker cakes seemed like a way to do some homebaking until I got my oven back but the cakes were something that was "got through" rather than enjoyed so I went back to shop bought until I could use a proper oven. Now I figure that the power used in putting the oven on for one cake costs less than the ingredients if we don't like the breadmaker cake so I don't bother experimenting any more.
My first two attempts might just have been unlucky - first one was certainly my fault - but I don't see the point in risking it now. Its not like the BM cooks it for free anyway!0 -
I have had the same problem. The cake doesn't rise and is very dense. I tried the banana cake following the recipe faithfully as well as the ginger and apple, but both although edible are not what I expect from cakes. Have gone back to the oven now, but very disappointed. The bread though is excellent.
My son has had the same issues and he has a different breadmaker0 -
