The Magdalene Laundries "scandal"

No it is because abortions (with few exceptions) are illegal in both parts of Ireland.

OK not illegal in NI, but much more strictly controlled compared to the rest of the UK.0

The emphasis was far more on the sinful girls paying for their sins over and over again for years while being ruled over by sadistic nuns. The same nuns who would quite happily go to church and listen to bible reading on charity, forgiveness, loving your neighbour and so on.
Where were the "sinful" fathers of the girls' babies while the girls were imprisoned?0 -
This is a reflection on history and the failures of the Irish state in aligning itself with the Church. In doing so they gave priests and nuns too much power over their young people. It wasn't just the Magdalene Laundries either, it was the Christian Brothers and the Nazareth Homes - all discredited now because of their cruelty.
In my opinion the two states should have investigated these issues a long time ago. That they didn't was a sign of the times and the investigations taking place now are a sign of the times we live in. These places were as bad as the workhouses which were abolished a long time ago.0 -
Preaching in the chapel probably.
That was certainly the case in the village where some of my family members grew up. It wasn't a RC priest but the local vicar had a string of young housemaids who all had to leave the village after a time - they were gossiped about but he went into the pulpit every week to give a long sermon on his parishioners' evil ways.0 -
Double standards and religion always seem to go hand in hand on this island of ours!0

.Magdalene laundries: UK women's 'fast settlement' calls
Women who spent time in the Republic of Ireland's Magdalene laundries have called for a "fast, fair and just" settlement for their suffering.

I think its a scandal that the name Magdelene is associated with this too.0
