Next year I will be of Pension Credit age and as I understand it no longer have to sign in at Jobcentre plus but what happens to my wife who is younger than me. Does she need to sign on to receive her NI contribution or does she get her NI automatically?

Unless she has some other reason why NI contributions would be credited e.g. looking after children under 12, then I think she would need to be signing on and looking for work. Or she could pay voluntary contributions.
Has she checked how many years contributions she already has? https://www.gov.uk/state-pension-statement0
