Company Cars & NCD No Claims Discounts

Just a quick question if I may.

We currently have 2 vehicles in our household and I am looking at a position that provides a company car that can be used for personal use. This means that I can sell my car, potentially saving 1000's per year. Then I got a little worried about my full NCD.

With our remaining car, can we take it in turns to insure it meaning that we both keep our NCD's current. If at any point in the future I need to get a car again I wouldn't want to have to build up NCD's all over again.

I can't see any reason why this can't be done as you are allowed to insure a car not belonging to yourself & proof of NCD's are valid for 2 years?

Anybody have any thought on this.

  • Speak to your insurer, some accept company car driving towards NCD, not all do though.

For the majority of insurers this works fine as long as you correctly declare the main driver of the vehicle if it is the case that it's your turn to be the PH but your partner is the one that is driving the vehicle as you've got the company car.

For a small number of insurers it is the Main Driver that provides the NCD (and earns it) rather than the PH but this is the minority.

As has been said, some insurers will give credit for years of company car driving however if these are full NCD or if they are considered more "honourary" (like ND NCD) does vary and honourary ones tend to only be applicable if you stay within the insurer
  • I used to have a company vehicle and have moved back to using my own. My insurers accepted a headed letter from my previous employers stating that there were no claims whilst I was responsible for the vehicle but I did have to provide proof of the my no claims before I had the company car.

I guess I was very lucky as I was expecting to have to start my no claims from scratch again. It might be worth contacting a few insurance providers as I imagine they will all have some sort of policy/procedure for people in your position.
  • take the oppertunity to get yourself a nice classic car for the summer and just insure it then!

Some companies will give NCD even if you weren't the main driver, as long as you were a named driver on a policy with them, eg Direct Line.
