thanks everyone. I think my parents already get some housing benefit, but i do not think it's anywhere near £144 a week which is the limit. I will try to find out why. I am not in any position to help my parents financially, which is why this is constantly in the back of my mind so much. If i was, i would feel better about things.
  • Ok so the worst has happened and my parents havent been able to afford the £800 monthly rent and the private landlord has given them notice 6 weeks to leave. They cant get a deposit for a new rental and i really want to know their rights . Obviously they'd be intentionally homeless as they couldnt pay the rent, but is there anything the council are obliged to do, esp due to my dads mental health we can get all supporting docs. i want them on the housing register but not sure if its worth it, if theyd only get priorty C or D. Help, im at a loss. i cant afford to help them and ive bailed them out twice before and dont feel it is my responsibility to fund two adults. My dad is continuing to look for a full time job but as he is 60 no one wants to employ him so hes stuck on part time hours, whilst my mum is full time. it's simply not enough to live on and i am afraid they'll be on the streets...pls help me.

Seek advice from shelter or citizens advice. Im not sure they would be classed as intentionally homeless due to not being able to pay rent.

Council might house them in temporary accommodation if there are no council flats available, some areas have stock thats hard to let and people can move in without being priority on the housing list.

Does your parents' local authority have a Benefits Advisor?
    (Example here http://www.coventry.gov.uk/a_to_z/service/261/welfare_rights-benefits-advice_and_assessment).
  • laydeeqt, this is really a question for the housing board.

Meantime, have a look on the Shelter website (this link is for England - law is different elsewhere) . And maybe CAB for a benefits check.
