cleaning candlesticks - advice please?

I want to clean my v mucky candlesticks but am not sure what to use - they are silver coloured but am pretty sure not silver plate or anything like that (let alone silver!) so wary of using silver polish as read that it strips off the outer layer which might reveal who knows what with these. Also, does anyone have any tips on getting off candlewax delicately, without scratching the metal - I stupidy tried to clean some other metal candlesticks (and these were silver plate) with a knife to scrape off the wax, and they've never been the same since....

All advice much appreciated. I use them weekly, but have just been putting off and putting off cleaning them as no idea how to do it, till they look awful. Then I thought of asking you good folks....:)

Hi, to get rid of candlewax, put the candlesticks into a washing up bowl, and cover with hot water (from the tap should be fine). This will melt the wax, so you then need to get them out and clean the bowl, or it will solidify again, and leave another mess to clean ;) I speak from experience

Unless the candlesticks are really precious, I'd use a bit of Silver Glit (impregnated wadding in a tin) to clean, then a duster to buff them up.
