Notice of correction?

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all had a great weekend :D

I have obtained a copy of my credit report from experian and it states that I have a default on an old mobile phone account.

I was made aware of this already as a few months ago I looked into my credit file to see why my rating was poor. When I realised (it had been there for 3 yrs or so!) I contacted Orange who were totally unhelpful and couldn't give me any details or tell me where the debt had been passed to. I have never received any corrrespondance about this but then again I have moved house quite a bit over the past couple of years so this isn't really that surprising. I don't think I have an outstanding debt with orange in fact i didn't know anything about it.

Out of the blue before Christmas I received a call from a debt collection agency at work?! Chasing the debt. I was in fact relieved to hear from them so that I could do something about it (that was a first for the guy on the phone! :) ) However he couldn't give me an account number/ mobile number or in fact anything which proved this was my debt. In light of this he sent me a letter informing me that they would put everything on hold until they could prove i owed the money and I haven't heard anything since.

My question is can I apply for a notice to be added to my credit file to say that this debt is not proven to be mine? I know they wont take it off but surely I don't have to suffer until they can prove it?

Any advice would be welcome... I know you're all much more switched on to this sort of thing than i am!

Yes you can add a notice of correction to your credit file (you might want to check if its on all 3 agencies files and if so will need to make the note on all 3 files).

If the default is in the name of Orange then I would write to them, state that you have noticed that there is a default on your credit file in their name and that you require them to provide proof of the alleged outstanding debt or remove it from your file.

Something a bit like the prove it letter, but altered to refer to your credit file rather than them sending a letter chasing for the debt. Letter when you know nothing about about the debt - AKA "Prove it" letter

I've just been on to experian to look at my credit report in order to get the details to apply for a notice of correction and although my files states I have one default its not there!? All of my other accounts are showing but not that one?? I need the details in order to write to Orange and request an amendment. I have emailed experian to check but could it have been removed or would it just not show the details for some reason?

    How frustrating!!
