UK Gold Refiners scam??

Options
I sent some gold to uk gold refiners and received an awful quote - nowhere near the online quote. They have a price match guarantee - they will beat anyone else by 10% up to 95% of market value. Fine.

BUT I have been trying to contact them to decline the offer or enquire about the price match and the phone goes to answer machine, no one will phone me back. I have sent numerous emails, they won't reply. I never provided my bank details so there is no way I can even get paid unless I accept the quote online and fill out a form.

T&C's say they will return the gold if we do not reach an agreeable price within 5 days. I received my quote on 06/02/2013 and have been trying to contact them every day since.

Has anyone dealt with them before? Or suggest what I can do?

  • Normally these sites get found out quite quickly if they're a scam. Contact them (leave a message over the phone and if they have an online contact form). Give them 5 working days then chase up. If they then don't contact you speak to the police.

There was a programme a couple of years back which highlighted how hard it is to get your gold back from these postal gold services. When you do get your gold back check out prices from local pawn brokers or jewellers and consider ebay as well as you tend to get just under scrap value for it.

    sorry I couldn't help more.
  • I had left a phone message and sent another email and used the online contact form threatening to contact the authorities and I received a phone call from the managing director saying he was appalled and going to send my gold back straight away but I managed to get him to increase the value of my gold from 60% of market value to 95% and had the bank transfer completed the next day. I was getting really worried there!! Not a bad price considering they sent a prepaid special delivery envelope so I didn't need to pay for sending my gold away.
  • I have had dealings with this firm in the past. Their calculator is misleading also.

Was the boss called Ian Hirst by any chance. the UK gold refiners website looks very similar to www.mycashgoldmine.co.uk !
  • Ukgoldrefiners.co.uk are a complete thieving scum I had the same experience last week I sent my gold a bracelet that was valued at £495 scrap from jewelers and a ring which was about £30 I got my valuation at £348 which was £5 per gram under what there website said It also had the promise of returning my gold within 5 days if I wasn't happy I tried every number I could find and sent them constant emails demanded it back with no replys so in the end I took the offer as I thought something's better than nothing everything on there site is a complete lie I was fuming with myself for sending my gold to a po box address and should of checked it out first I'm going to get everyone I know to order the gold packs and use there special delivery envelopes to sell other stuff from eBay the managing director is Ian Wilson the same as my cash gold mine DONT USE THEM IT'S A SCAM
  • I've had a similar experience. Valued gold at £536 on the website then had an email valuation of £348, nearly £200 less and the gold was downgraded. ( £348 - seen that before ) Bearing in mind it was hallmarked and verified by 3 different High St. buyers who offered more, I asked for an explanation to which I received the valuation again, twice. I emailed and rang the Customer Services number and also Ian Wilson's own number and got nowhere. I asked for it back by phone and email and got nothing. So I gave it one last try before I got in touch with Trading Standards and the Police, and somebody actually answered the phone. Nearly fell over. The upshot is they'll revalue it later today and send me the new figure. I'll update on here when I get it.
  • These people are absolute conmen

I sent off gold (valued at about £250) and received quote back for £170.00 Phoned to ask for gold back and amazingly got through to someone first time - they instantly apologised for low valuation, blamed it on an error and offered to send new valuation. Came through at £256 which I accepted and gave bank details for money to be transferred. That was mid-day weds - money never turned up and it took me loads of calls & emails until following Monday before I actually spoke to someone. Got apologies and assurances that it was a mistake and money would be paid that day - it wasn't. Again chased up with emails & messages and has finally been paid today (Thursday). Think they rely on people giving up and accepting their rubbish offers and blaming their attrocious service on everyone else. Caused stress and frustration as I thought I had lost money and gold. DO NOT USE.
  • I’m quite surprised about these posts as I have used Uk gold refiners on 4 separate occasions even referring my friend who has now used them twice. The only issue I have had is on one occasion the quote given was way below what it should have been but I got a call telling me their valuer had made a mistake and was given a price I accepted. In my job I get my hands on a lot od dental gold and scrap gold and need a swift turnaround for cash and they have always been very accommodating
  • BE AWARE I made the same mistake HOWEVER I thought it was UK gold refiners ww.ukgoldrefiners.co.uk but I had actually sent my gold to ww.goldrefiners.co.uk the latter being the type of stereotypical cash for gold company . I actually ended up transacting with UK gold refiners after calling them by mistake and I have to say there were no issues
  • Watch out for London Gold Refinery.

They quoted me £733 on their website, so I sent them my gold. They then came back with an offer of £566! If I reject the offer, they charge a minimum of £23 for it to be returned insured.
  • These companies/people sound like real shitheads.
