Potatoes recommendations please

Hi I normally buy the potatoes that are cheap but they seem on times to go to mush so I realise I need to pay more to have a better quality boiling potato! So trying to keep cost in mind what are your recommendations please. Thanks

I'm on my own so i don't use sack-fulls and have found it's better buying them in tins,
Tesco Everyday new potatoes 567g, drained weight 345g are 15p. I'll get a few tins at a time and keep them in the cupboard.

  • I bought cheap white potatoes from Mr T last week and they have really been good. I have boiled them, roasted them and mashed them and they didn't go mushy at all.

I think it's just luck after the dreadful growing season last year.

I really miss large potatoes for baking - i can't find any in the shops at the moment

I find the tesco white potatoes fine too, it's shocking how much potatoes have shot up in price but as you say last years crops were severely affected so it was expected.

I buy loose baking pots from tesco and get nice big ones if you root through them :)
  • if you have a lidl near you, they have 7.5kg sack of spuds for £3.70ish. bit pricey compare to 25kg sacks but the potatoes are lovely, good all rounder for roasts, mash, wedges, chips
  • For mashing or making chips, I will only use one of the following (in order of preference):

    Maris piper
    King Edward
    Rooster

They are all considerably more expensive than cheap white potatoes but IMO definitely worth paying the extra for.
  • Hiya, I often buy a £3 bag of potatoes from Iceland. It lasts a week or 2.
Chips are frozen chunky from Iceland a £1 bag.

I think if your potatoes go to mush, maybe you are cooking them to long?

Yesterday I cooked roast potatoes. I often put my potatoes in the electric steamer with the veg. It saves electric putting a extra pan on the cooker.

I keep my spuds in a plastic box in a dark cupboard in the kitchen.
    They still root though!
A week ago, I read somewhere that if you put an apple in the box it stops the rooting - so I am trying the tip out.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)
  • Maris Piper every time. They are more expensive, though, but worth it IMO.
  • I think it's just luck at the moment with potatoes as they have suffered terribly due to the weather. I have just finised a bag from lidl and they were terrible but my last lidl potatoes were great although they were from S. Europe so that maybe helped. I have also found Tesco basics hit and miss. Steaming should always be better than boiling though so give that a try
