Getting Married Abroad-How Much?

Hi
Having seen the cost of the weddings in UK, we are wanting to go abroad, and do it on the cheap (but nice!) Hate being centre of attention and the idea of a big day in uk as my fiance has a huge family and mines small too.

Anyone got any ideas of the cost of marrying abroad and location ideas?
Thanks

Hi I am not sure on price but a couple of people, who are friends of friends, have got married in Santorini. I have seen the photos and it looks amazing there - very hot!

You'll have to look up costs though so not sure how cheap/expensive it is x
  • There are various options on how to go about it, you can go through a tour operator, a wedding planner, or DIY.
We're taking the DIY option in Northern Italy, but we have the luxury of a friend out there who is helping us a lot with various things.

The best thing I would recommend you do is research where you personally would like to go - if you both have a favourite place, why not go again? Check out the consulate website for what you need to do to get married there and take it from there.

The fees that I know of for ours are:
Notice of marriage in Scotland - £30 each
Consulate fees for the Nulla Osta (certificate of no impediment) - 79 euros each
Consulate courier fee - 12 euros
Cost of wedding hall and ceremony for civil ceremony - 363 euros (I think, it's on partner's email) and if we choose weekend or holiday periods it is extra, also extra if we wanted to have it in a licenced venue apart from the wedding hall)

These are the minimum costs we will have to pay. There are also the usual costs, ie flowers, hair, etc associated with a wedding.

Shop around and see what you can find. There are many wedding planner services on the internet, most that you have to contact for a quote, but it might be worth it to have the extra peace of mind. One thing we considered was getting married on the quiet in the UK and then flying out and having a symbolic ceremony (the wedding without the official piece of paper at the end), it may be worthwhile looking at some of these.

It can be done VERY cheap, providing you go for a basic package and cheap accomodation.

We get married in May in Cyprus and its cost us around £7,000, but our holiday alone was over 3, and we have chosen pretty expensive options.

My suggestion would be DONT go through a travel agent.
Its much cheap and friendlier to go through a wedding planner.
Use google for recommendations and there are lots of really helpful pages on Facebook, depending on where you plan to marry.

  • Hi, We have booked for Cuba May this year. The holiday itself has cost £908 each All Inclusive for 2 weeks and the wedding package with Thomas cook was £619 extra. Its a good package but we will be upgrading the amount of pictures when we get there. it includes all the trimmings ... Sol cayo guillermo 4*. I have been previously to that area but a different hotel and decided thats where to do it.
Total cost upto now is £2435
    Hope this helps :D
  • Hiya we were also considering going abroad and did a lot of research into it. Unfortulately we have some family that won't fly and we wanted them to be there so were limited to France and Italy really. You cannot marry legally in Italy unless you have been a citizen (i think its for 40 days) and we didn't want to have a pretend wedding like some people do. Once we had weighed up the costs of what we would want in Italy, the price worked out just the same for fewer guests in Italy vs all our guests at home. As the price we actually no cheaper we decided to stay local. If we were happy getting married just the two of us we could definately have made it cheaper, but there were certain people we wanted to be there. I also felt a bit cheeky asking people to dedicate their annual holiday to us and the cost it left on them. I do know you can get much cheaper options further afield though (cyprus etc) Good luck what ever you decide :)

    Hi ,

We got married in Florida, The wedding its self was very cheap. We spent money on flights and a villa but that was a holiday/honeymoon too.

I got married in NYC, had 5 days there, 4 in Phili, and then 3 in DC, come home, had a party / reception for around 200, the whole lot, dress, suit, flights, hotel, spends, etc all under 6k.

Fiance and i are getting married in St Lucia this june. We paid around £3k for us (all inc resort, upgraded room, upgraded flight, wedding). We played Virgin against Hayes & Jarvis and First Choice and reduced the original price for the package.
Our guests (who want to come) are staying at the same place and bought their holidays in the BA sale/ We are staying 2 weeks and our guests are just with us for one. But we arrive before them so will be able to meet them when they fly in :)

As other posters have said, depends what you want, where you want and who you want. If you feel you need people there who maybe cant travel, then consider a wedding here. In our case, we are having the beach wedding i wanted, then a reception/party for everyone a few weeks after we come home :)
Change is inevitable...nothing stays the same forever
