Marvellous opportunity, OP , to research minimum balanced nutrition. It's all on the side of the packet. Water is a good start. No more expense of tea coffee sugar sweeteners etc. Re-constituted milk powder is fantastic protein value. 25p a litre.
Hobs and ovens are an expensive way to cook. A cheap steamer, slow cooker, microwave oven and blitzer for soup is the way to go.
Liver is good protein value. Porridge instead of bread. No marg spreads or fats. Olive oil maybe. Ignore recipes . Ignore taste.
Just go by the minimum cost per 100g of protein and calories.
And if you have time for recreation, you have time to grow your own food.0 -
Ahem that sounds horribly depressing0

Thanks for the suggestions. The uni dd is hoping to go to is Royal Holloway in Surrey, she wants especially to stay in the victorian Founders Building as it looks amazing but it has all the above daft rules.

You are also not allowed to use any equipment in the pantry other than what they supply.
And yes you have to pay extra on top of rent when you eat - I agree, its mad. The SC blocks are more modern and tend to be ensuite which is why they are more expensive.
She wants to live on campus first year to meet people but will definitely move off second year.
Beautiful building.
A building like that will presumably be listed and prohibitive to insure, I don't think the rules are daft to protect a piece of heritage. It's possible the services will be out of the ark, heating/ hot water boiling or freezing for example and iffy insulation, because it's so difficult to update things without destroying the building. Has she been able to question current residents?
Looking at some of the images there are original sash windows and cast iron radiators, and they apparently only have one or two electrical sockets in each room, sometimes shared between two people! The novelty of padding up and down corridors to queue for the bathroom carrying all your toiletries soon wears off. Ditto kitchen carrying all your utensils, teaspoons are like gold dust.
Some of the kitchens/ pantries have rice cookers, how unusual!Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
You have a marvellous opportunity, OP, a clean slate, limited money. It means no comfort food and no need to cater for someone else's taste.
Plain water is a good start.Plan your daily meals round minimum cost of 55g's of protein and 2000/2500 calories.0 -
You can steam veggies in a microwave (either buy a microwaveable steamer bowl or use a pyrex bowl with some water in the bottom and put a plate on top to cover) and cook pasta, rice and noodles in no time. Drain veggies, add sauces and heat for a further few minutes and voila! Instant "stir fry"!
Bacon and sausages cook quite easily in the microwave, you can also boil chicken in a microwave (Pyrex bowl and hot water). Poached eggs are easy too.
You can also bake a cake in a microwave my friend did this all the time. Google microwaveable cake recipes.
It's not ideal but you can do a lot with a microwave and boiling water, just get creative with recipes!“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A.
