I must add, I think (well at least local to me) that hospices are really excellent, if, they really do try so hard. I know you cant say it was a good experience, but I was very happy with the one that is local to me. They deserve all the support they can get.

they are amazing places:Ain my experience. I still have a terrible guilt at not being able to keep my dad here. But if have felt more guilty if he'd been in pain

I suppose its something we dont like to think about till it happens or we have had contact with them.

I do not know how people can do a job where they know people will die at some stage.
Hats off to them they are doing a fantastic job :T:T making those last days as happy/pleasant/pain free as possible but I would find it hard to be emotionally detatched

Excellent Artha, will have a look now. And if you see any log-burners going cheap in our area, give me a shout please as want another one for a little construction I am doing at the bottom of the garden. I LOVE log burners!!

I love bonfires and have a bit of a reputation as a pyromaniac:o I assume it was a neighbour once called the fire brigade when I was having a "little burn";). I was quite happily tending to my roaring fire at the top of the garden when I became aware of sirens , flashing lights and a fireman bursting through my garden side gate, dashing up the garden and without speaking to me said into his radio "it's OK, controlled burn" and dashed off again:rotfl::rotfl:

You have no guilt at all fc, to be blunt you where needed elsewhere and I am sure the trained medical staff could make his last days more pain free and knew what to look out for more than you could have.
We all have regrets when someone close passes away but beating yourself up over it does not change anything and your dad would not want you to or that is my way of thinking anyway.

Don't feel guilty claire, I don't. There comes a time when we all need the help of those angels in the hospice, whether as patients or carers. There is no way I can keep mum out of the pain that is engulfing (is that the right word) her and I guess it was the same for you with your dad. :A
