Selling myself in an email. Help please :)

Hi,
I am currently at college studying Access to HE, and I've got a spot at uni in September *woop!*
I am going to be studying a BA Marketing degree and before I start (and as part of my college portfolio) I really want to visit some local Marketing Agencies to look at what they do, ask some questions and get a little bit of experience in the marketing world. (Hopefully gain some contacts as well)
I've found 2 companies local to me, I would like to go and visit them so I am writing out email drafts to send to the companies, But I've never been one for selling myself and I am struggling to write something that will convince them to let me visit.
If anyone could kindly give me some pointers I would be really grateful, I want to make a good impression.
Thanks everyone

It is easier to amend that create... so why don't you put your ideas here first and then ask for comment rather than expect other forumites to do all of the work for you?:hello:0

one tip for you if you are struggling with the format or how to open the email etc. is to just start writing words or phrases or sentences like bullet points before thinking of the structure.
Also make sure you have it clear what you are looking for and what you are willing to do i.e. I am looking for a placement which will give me some experience in X computer programme, I am available w/c X for X number of weeks on a full time voluntary basis.0 -
If you do a SWOT analysis of yourself - something might fall into your lap that gives you the starting point of selling yourself.0

Sorry if it came across like that, that is not what I am expecting at all .
I have started drafting, I didn't post it as its got the details of the companies and my college etc in but i will *** them out and post up my notes.0 -
Ok
I have found the names of the people that deal with employment of the companies in the Marketing area, so I thought I would email directly to them (thier emails were on the websites)
Here are some of the notes I have made:
I hope you do not mind me emailing, my name is ****I am currently a college student at the ****, studying Access to HE diploma. I am doing well on my course and have secured a place at **** university in September to study a BA in Marketing.
I was hoping, if it is possible that I could come into your offices and have a look at what you do. << expand.
Things about me:
• I am focused on my studies and career
• keen to gain experience within this sector
• like challenges and work that expands my boundaries/borders? (can’t think of a word!)
• I am punctual, smart and organised
• I can make a cracking cup of tea
Things about Marketing:
• I am fascinated by consumer and buyer behaviour and the psychology of marketing
• I am interested in digital and social media, branding and Public Relations
• I now a little about SEO and PPC advertising and wish to expand my knowledge in these areas.
Things I want to achieve from the visits:
• to learn new skills
• to experience the atmosphere and pace of a real working environment
• to confirm existing career aims
• to learn the ‘language’ of the industry
EDIT: Just to add, the irony of wanting to work in Marketing, but not being very good at marketing myself is not lost on me :rotfl:0 -
A couple of things;
First line take out I hope you don't mind... And put something like 'I'm emailing you as I am actively seeking some work experience in the area of marketing....'
Then go on to your history ie doing an access course accepted onto Uni course.
Following that; I am interested in X about marketing in particular and see from your website that this is your specialism/you have an outstanding department or whatever. (Look on their website and tailor this to their company)
Then go onto a little more about you and your work skills (I do like your bit about tea!) and about what you are hoping to achieve.
I think what you have is a great start but you should be more direct (but still be polite!) and not sound apologetic.
Remember work experience works two ways, they give you experience but you work for free for them.0 -
If I were selling myself to a marketing company, I would design a flyer which sold my good points - your forum signature might be a start! :rotfl:Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

Amazing idea! I am going to have a go at making an infographic along side my email that will have the basic points of what I am after and lots of Buzzwords hopefully that will show me as creative and dynamic.
Thank-you Bubblegum I will take out the apologetic bit!0
