Well for what its worth.....
A colleague and I was having a moan a while back about our pay etc and it turned out that a new member of staff who is in a similar role to what my colleague does was being paid a hell of alot more than she was and my colleague was not a happy bunny.
A new member of staff in my depatment hasn't actually told me her salary but she has said something that leads me to believe that she is being paid a similar amount more than me.
Am I a happy bunny? Not really and yes I have thought about raising it with my boss but I'm just thinking of how to play it tbh.
If all your colleague is doing is making scarastic comments then I think you just need to ignore it.2014 Target;

Let me be quite clear - you can't be sacked, or even disciplined, for discussing your pay with someone unless there is a policy against doing so.
I suspect that things may calm down now that your colleague has been promoted. And apart from that comment I would recommend - just let it lie! You comment that you may have more experience than your lower paid colleague. Equally, you may not. Your pay might have been a mistake, your colleague's pay might have been a mistake - it's just human for people to feel upset if they find others are earning more than they are for the same work. Perhaps she DID raise a grievance, and perhaps she won it - in that case you wouldn't be upset, would you? Because you were surprised in the first place that you were paid more than she was !

You have a lot to learn about human nature; in confidendence can be interpreted in many different ways. Expressly forbidding someone to disclose personal information to third parties can be more effective. And if someone makes a 'snidey' remark to you, ask them to clarify what they mean there and then..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0 -
of course the cynic in me says she offered to help you because she wanted to know your salary!2014 Target;
