Fortunately I wasn't married to the thing when I left him so I'm not really sure on that one. Are you managing to make the payments at the moment as it may be easier to seek free advice once you know where you are with regards to finances.
However I did start a DMP with StepChange before the house repossession is totally sorted with the idea to re-consider my options when I know what kind of horrendous shortfall there is due to ex, so if you are struggling then I would speak to one of the free charities mentioned on the board, as it can always be changed when your finances do.
Just wanted to wish you good luck for the future.
I am managing- just - so i think it may be better to wait like you say

Reading through these posts has been really reassuring so thank you everybody. I got really ill back in January and am still waiting for a diagnosis on the mystery illness. As I work for a company who don't believe in paying their staff when they are ill I'm stuck on SSP and as my husband only returned to work in Feb after losing his job just before Christmas it's been a really tough few months for us and our debts have spiralled, which has been so frustrating as we were well on our way to having them all paid off and moving to Australia
I finally caved yesterday realising we couldn't cope with the situation as it is any longer, I'm getting several phone calls a day can barely make our rent payments at the moment so I spoke to Step Change yesterday and they are in the process of getting us set up on a DMP. I already feel 100x better knowing that things are moving in the right direction.
Knowing there is a support network on here aswell really helps so thank you very very much everyone, I'm sure that there are going to be many more dark days, but hopefully they are going to diminish!Debt April 2013: £38,282.35

Hi all, welcome to all the newbies starting their journey and good luck!
Im having a rubbish day. Had my mum to stay over easter and as my dmp is my guilty i overspent!!! Im so mad with myself!!!
As soon as she commented on the value crisps in my cupboard i rushed out n bought walkers just out of shame! In actual fact i prefer the calue crisps now and so do the kids!
She wanted to go shopping and with it being school holidays we took the kids.... Big mistake.... Spent £27 on stuff that i hadnt budgetted for and the kids were much happier at the park!!!!
I could kick myself, in fact if i physically could i would!!!
I should have been more organised... I still planned meals and avoided going out for a meal at her suggestion but with me paying (my mum has a habit of putting ideas in the kids heads with me footing the bill), bur still rubbish weekend, just glaf OH worked the bank holidays for extra pennies to compensate!!!
It wouldnt be too bad if i had spent the money on something worthwhile for the kids but it was just frittered!
Anyway rant over.... I am stupid and currently feel very ashamed of myself!LBM Dec 2012 total debt 33,889 :eek:dmp started March 2013 DFD Dec 2024

Morning all,
Hope everyone is ok. Welcome Clayre. It sounds like you have taken a big step in the right direction. Good luck with your DMP journey. I've found it very much a roller coaster so far but I would much rather be on it than stuck in the pit of debt and despair we were in before. We still have loads of debt but at least we are doing something about it.
Today is a bad day:( I had posted a check off for a training course that we had discussed and felt was essential if I'm going to increase our earnings and therefore pay off the debt much more quickly. Anyway they have cashed the cheque at the beginning of the month instead. So we are now overdrawn and have to get the money in quick before they represent it.
Gutted as I finally felt we had some sort of control back, ah well that's life i suppose.Started Self Managed DMP 10th May 2017.

I've been on a DMP for the last year and have managed to bring the debt down from £40K to £32.5K. The problems is a lot of the creditors are still charging interest because I'm paying above the minimum payment. They explained that if I was to reduce the payment to under the minimum they would freeze the interest. I've explained this to Step Change who manage my DMP and they refuse to lower the payment. Surely it makes sense to do this? I'm seriously thinking of going it alone and managing my own DMP, at least then I will have complete control over my payments. I'd be interesting to know if anyone else has had simalar experiences.0

Hi ravens :hello:
I answered this on your Self DMP v Managed DMP thread a few days ago. You had some great advice from Depth Charge too:

I have for a family member - did it years ago for myself.
The benefits are that the creditors get the money when you get paid - SC hold on to it for a month, so efffectively DFD is a month earlier on self managed - if that makes sense.
SC pay based on the monthly payment not pro rata on amounts owed.
I believe TTFTM has changed theirs to self managed as well.Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.0 -
