Ok, I will be finding out on Monday after I speak to someone at step change so I will make sure all creditors get a payment a month until the payments to step change kick in. My first point of call tomorrow is a new bank account so as soon as I have those details the rest of my day will be spent changing over everything. I don't intend to send any letters out until Tuesday so I can be sure my new bank account is switched for everything. I also need to log in to all my creditor accounts for reference numbers anyway so they can't close them just yet! When I switch everything over, I'm assuming I don't switch the direct debits for the debts going into the DMP (stupid question but I have to ask!) I figure that none of my creditors are going to be aware that anything is wrong until they get a letter from either me or step change, which is likely to be well over a week away and gives me a bit of breathing space as all accounts are currently up to date. I will just pay off littlewoods and leave them out of it :)

    Hi,
    1. Open new basic bank account
    2. Change wages/benefits/income into new account
    3. Move dd's but NOT debt one's into new account

The creditors will be aware as soon as you don't pay your minimum payments and that's when the letters and possibly calls will start so be ready with your sc reference number to quote them.

Hi Puzzcat, thank you for your advice, I will send £1 with a covering letter every month until the dmp is up and running properly. I'm currently looking at basic bank accounts online to see which would be the best for me but they all pretty much look the same to be fair so I'm winning no matter which one I choose! Oh is now on board too (much to my relief!) and having posted on here I feel much more positive about things, rather like I can cope and not have to put a 'brave face' on things. One more question I have though - can a dmp be refused and what happens if it does?

Not heard of one being refused unless of course someone's budget is so tight there is no money for creditors. Have you had a play on the stepchange debt remedy tool, you can set up your dmp from that without having to wait to speak to anyone! It allows you to work out your budget, and will then recommend the best way forward as in dmp, iva etc. Make sure you allow yourself a generous budget dmp's are usually for a number of years and the odd treat will be required!

  • A long time has passed since the last visit and I like to see still so much help. I no longer have the debt but this is due to a strange circumstance and not my ability to pay. A family deceased and their money to me and I did not know or even meet this person. Life is strange and death also. So I will come to see the help and say hello to the twins and the other persons also.

Lovely to hear from you Alice. Sorry to hear someone lost their laugh but I am glad it has helped you to become debt free. What's the plan now?

    Hi

They don't have to accept it but in reality creditors don't let you know either way. Just pay the DMP amount, they have to accept the money. All will work out.

I have had a play on the Step Change website and that's how I came across the DMP as it suggested on for me! I did just go on what I was allowing us now, which meant I was pretty tight, so I might go back and change certain numbers! I need to set up a new bank account and transfer payments from tax credits/child benefit/csa etc before the DMP becomes 'official' so I can't do it over the site just yet, although it's good to know I can do it without speaking to anyone :) I figured out that we would half our debt payments with a DMP and I'd be happy with that, it also means we can start over without everything we get being eaten up by the overdraft. On a different note, my oh came out with 'does this mean we'll be closer to setting a wedding date?' as sweet as that is, I did have to tell him a wedding was a bit far off yet as we've got to save for it (we'd planned to anyway but obviously my debt was stopping us!) It did brighten my day a little though......
