Hi all. I have finally finished reading with great interest the entire thread and thought "time to stop lurking and join in"
My Husband and I have just started a DMP with StepChange and have a start date of 1st March.
It took us a while to realise that this could be (& hopefully will be) the best option for us. Although most of our payments are up to date this is only because we are juggling credit to cover everything.
I just wanted to get a bit of info on what hppens next - i know stepchange contact all creditors but should i be contacting them too?
Also we have a loan with Barclays and we also bank with barclays but stepchange have advised us to open a basic account with Barclays incase they keep taking money against the loan - cant they stil do that from a basic accounnt? should we be looking into an account with someone else?
Im sure there wil be may more queestions along the way and i am grateful for any advise that anyone can give.0 -
What date do you get paid?
If you can I would take all salary into new account - and pay utitlities and mortgage by card - all other debts just send a token payment.
I will get paid on 26/02/13 this month. Our new Current Account is still not set up and my employer needs 3 weeks (!) notice to change my account details.
I don't mind to pay this month for my mogage and 2 personl loans to give me some time to sort out our paperwork, especially one of the loan is with my current bank and I don't want them to get wind of my defaults before I close the account. Hope this makes sense.

Hi Buzzkye,
Welcome there are quite a few of us starting DMP with SC on 1st March. I wrote to each of our creditors using the letter SC put together just briefly explaining the circumstances and that SC would be in touch. I enclosed a token payment of £1 cheque for each of them. So far five of the eight creditors have cashed the cheques, but I have not had any letters or phone calls acknowledging these.
I would definitely open an account elsewhere. The co op cash minder account seems to be a good basic one.
Don't hesitate to ask questions, I have them every day? The lovely people on here are very knowledgeable and always happy to help.
HH thank you for the pm I have only just noticed it.

Hi buzzykye and welcome :hello:
You need a basic account with any bank you don't have any debts with, or isn't associated to a bank with debts. As Julie has said, the Co-op Cashminder is a good one if you have no debts with the Co-op.

Hi Everyone
I just thought I would pop in and say hi to you and all my fellow newbies.
I have just started the first month on a DMP with StepChange and I have to say they have been wonderful so far along with all the advice on this excellent forum. It has been a great relief to know there are people out there who have experienced problems with debt and have got through it and that help is always at hand.
As someone who has always paid their debts it was hard at first to accept that there was a problem but I am so glad I took advice on how to sort it out.
I have been fortunate at the moment that my creditors seem to have bit a bit quiet and apart from a couple of letters acknowledging my letter to them saying I was on a DMP I have not had a lot of contact but I am sure that will all change once the accounts go into arrears this month. However having spent the last year dealing with the repossession of my house I am pretty much prepared for it all and any phone calls I may have. Not necessarily the best training but it has certainly made me able to deal with any debt people contacting me!
I just wanted to wish those on their journey good luck and congratulations to any of those that are now debt free who still so kindly take the time to share their wisdom and advice, and for that I thank you all.
