Hi I have just been thinking if the present hoo hah over the hosemeat will stop you or make you think twice about actually buying frozen ready meals at all.from what I read theis is only the tip of the iceberg (pardon the pun)and many more things may come to light in the processed food market with more testing.I'm not affected as I don't and never have bought processed frozen food as I have found it to be pricy, tasteless and too full of chemicals for my likeing, plus I do enjoy cooking and making my own home cooked food from scratch I can get better value and far more for my money.I was wondering how the big supermarkets and stores are going to work out what to sell to their customers who are used to buying ready to eat meals if they are now going to be scrutinising everything thats sold for horse,or anything else out of the ordinary.
Perhaps Mum won't be going to Iceland anymore and may just go and buy some real meat from a butchers and DIY it.I am not saying that all processed food is suspect as I don't eat the stuff myself but I wonder how many of you may think twice before you buy the next instant ready meal to 'ping' in your microwave
P.S. I too have eaten horsemeat in France where my brother lives but its not something I would choose to eat much as I found it a bit 'heavy' to digest. I don't eat rabbit because I find its just too full of bones for my liking, but lots of folk do and enjoy it

  • I don't understand - people eat other meat so why not horses?

I'm veggie and have been for nearly 30 years; but the crap that I see people eat without a second thought - it makes me laugh that now it's come out that it's horses they are all up in arms.

Either you care about what you eat and eat what you know you are eating, or you are spoon-fed whatever Tesco deems barely edible/swept up off the floor for the cheapest possible price for them and the best profit margin.

You can't have it both ways.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • I stopped buying ready meals back in the BSE scare. I'd have no particular worries about eating horse, as long as that was what I thought I'd bought... But I'm afraid I don't trust supermarkets or ready-meal producers to have anything but profit for their shareholders in mind.

I don't like buying processed foods just because I don't know what's in it. Would rather make lasagne etc. downside is times like now when I'm ill and would like the convenience. Thank goodness I can fall back on my freezer stocks - homemade x
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.
  • I dont buy lots of ready meals, I do have one weakness, and thats the Levi Roots Reggae Reggae Chicken Curry (its just not the same homemade!) but the horsemeat scare wouldnt put me off. If I choose to eat processed ready meals, i'm under no illusions what goes into them!
Eating horsemeat wouldnt bother me either - from what i've heard its actually very tasty!

I do wonder though, how many of these people who are up in arms over the whole thing have ever had a kebab? I love kebab meat, but its a rare treat for me, but again, I am well aware I could be eating any part of any animal!
the only debt left now is on credit cards! The evil loan has gone!! :j:j
  • I always keep the odd ping meal in the freezer for those nights when unexpected things come up.
Take for example this week when i spent 3 days in hospital with ds and the oh who doesn't cook was left to fend for the other 3.
I have no aversion to eating horse meat, i love veal and venison, what's the difference to eating Bambi, Thumper or Black beauty?
I do have a problem with it being labeled wrong and not knowing what i am eating though, if i buy beef i want beef.
As you say this is the tip of the iceberg, can see the supermarket shelves being empty soon with all the recalls!
I will save my tesco £1 savings stamps this year! .......so far = £50 (full card#1)
Card #2 £6. I will not be skint at Chistmas this year!

    Total £56

Yes it's the fact that I think I would be buying beef when infact I'm not is what I'm angry about. Big wig companies enabling misleading practises.

I cook from scratch with family meals but I do buy burgers... did. I will no longer be buying burgers from supermarkets. I wish I could boycott supermarkets altogether but from a moneysaving/petrolvsaving perspective I don't know if it's an option.

I do buy ready made dieting calorie controlled meals for dieting days but o more... a pan of broth, portioned and frozen will suffice from now on. They're awful anyway!

Because humans have an association with horses that they do not have with cows, pigs and sheep - a close companionship similar to that of cats and dogs.

People are entitled to rely on what's on the label. For example, if raspberry yoghurts get labelled as strawberry by mistake they cannot just be put on the shelves, regardless of the fact that there is nothing wrong with the product itself.

In addition to which, horses which are not bred for human consumption are given veterinary drugs which are harmful to human health.

I'm not the biggest fan of ready meals, I do have a few on standby for when time is short, and yes I was a big fan of crispy pancakes (chicken ones). The fact its horsemeat doesn't bother me its the fact the list of whats in it isn't correct. If they're not saying there's horsemeat in them, what else is lurking in our convenience food?
CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J

Very close association indeed it would seem. ;)

I haven't bought frozen read meals for quite some time, and in light of recent events I don't think I'm going to start again soon.

I am partial to M&S food, and on a Sunday we might have something from their Cook range. Typically chicken or fish in a sauce, but it's not from the frozen range.

I've never knowingly eaten horse, and if I did I'd rather know what it is, rather than being given the impression that it's beef
