Salt stains in smooth leather walking shoes

As the title says, really....
I have a pair of stout walking shoes/low boots that I wear in the snow.
Even though I have rubbed dubbin into them and sprayed them with protector, they have acquired quite nasty looking salt stains.
Is there anything I can do to restore them without going to Timpsons or the like to buy yet more stuff for them?
