Cancel your own Oyster card?

Did you know you can cancel your own oystercard instantly?
I lost mine yesterday with £8 on it. it was after 8pm so helpline was closed.
I didnt want to wait 12 hours by which the credit could've been used.
Bought a new one, searched and searched online but could only find helpline details for lost/stolen. Signed in and transferred the funds to new card for next day pick up and cancelled the lost one.
Turns out you get £3 extra loaded (from the £5 card payout).
Phoned them up this morning to double check it worked, even though I got emails instantly and was told it worked!
Screw the 'helpline'.
