Selling old vinyl records -Beware!

To try and raise some much needed dosh I recently e-mailed a leading online company that buys and sells vinyl records. I know the records in question have a total value of around £300 but their offer was £50 for the lot. Talk about an insult!

Those looking to sell their unwanted vinyl please take note. Shop around before selling them as if you're not careful you'll sell them for a fraction of their worth.

I fail to see what the problem is.

If you know what they're worth, and let's face it, it's not difficult to establish this, with a monthly magazine and a myriad of websites dedicated to the topic, then why be offended at someone who's looking to profit by selling them on at this level offering you less than what they'll sell them for?
  • Name & shame the company if they're that bad.

Book/Record Collector mag valuation prices are for absolute mint condition only (sleeve & records), & tbh what you'll actually get depends on market & how much people are willing to pay for them + dealers have been long known to offer less (how do you think they make a profit?).

    Why should they be named?

They've broken no law, they've done nothing wrong.

There's no statute that says they HAVE to pay the OP what he wants to get...

It's like MusicMagpie etc that offer about 25p/30p for a good-condition CD. I know it isn't vinyl but the principal is the same.I've often sold similar CDs at car boot sales for a lot more. Depends how quickly I need the money and whether I can afford the time waiting for the carboot season to start after the winter. At least with these online trades you can get rid of the whole batch at once. With carboot sales etc they could sell in dribs and drabs and be hanging about for yonks (potentially getting damaged each time they are handled, packed up, transported and stored).

It is exactly like other posters have said, you are dealing with a middleman who also needs to make a profit.

My advice is to visit a Record Collector's Fair when there is one in your area and get chatting to the stall holders. They might be able to put you in touch with genuine buyers or make you an offer themselves.

As has been said, vinyl is a tricky thing to sell, buyers want it absolutely pristine to pay good prices for it.

    There's always eBay of course.

    Good Luck!

Why is insulting? they need to make profit. Hardly shocking is it?
They're also offering you the ease of shifting them as a whole unit.

If you feel they are 'worth' more then sell them yourself and stop whinging.
