Polish food

I recently had a look in a local Polish shop and Mr T also seems to sell a lot of Polish food - all of it seems very cheap, but I don't know what things are or how to use them - one jar said that the contents were good on toast, and looked like old fashioned dripping (one of my childhood pleasures!)

Are there any good recipes that are good for a newcomer to Polish cookery? Any products that are particularly good value?

I'm a proficient Italian/Indian/Chinese cook, and have found that supermarkets specific to those cuisines are usually cheaper than the supermarket, so I'm wondering whether Eastern European food could be the next thing for me!

  • Pierogi are lovely, more filling than pasta. My favourite is sauerkraut and mushroom, topped with some melted butter.

The dairy products are good, as is the ham and bread.

For a simple meal, try cooking pieces of sausage with onion chunks.

Or the old faithful beetroot soup.

I love cream cheese with horseradish, tiramisu flavour yoghurt, cherry yoghurt or anything with cherries in. Plus I eat silly amounts of gherkins and beetroot at the best of times.

Junk foods abound in all countries. They're going to be the things people look for in supermarkets.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.
