Council Tax in an empty property

Hi all,

New to the forums, I apologise if this post is in the wrong section!

I bought a repossessed house last Novemeber. The house had been empty for approx 6-12months prior.

I rang up my local council in January to let them know that I had bought the house but that there was no bathroom etc and that I was still living with my parents while I made the house liveable.

The lady on the phone said I qualified for a 6month exemption.

All is well!

However, yesterday, I recieved a tx message saying "PAY YOUR COUNCIL TAX, AVOID DEBT RECOVERY....." With the contact details after.

I rang up and told the lady that I was inder the impression that I was exempt from paying council tax for 6months as I am unable to live in the property. She said that as the house had been empty before I bought the property I was only entitled to 50% reduction in council tax (90% if furnished) and owe £155.

Does this sound correct, I am a total newbi to Council tax so any advice before I ring them back up is much appreciated!

Thanks

Paul

    Does this sound correct,
The 6 month Class C exemption is on the 'property' and not the 'occupier' - unless there has been a 6 week period of occupancy since the last exemption was last awarded to the property then you cannot claim another one.

If the property is undergoing or requiring major or structural works then you may be able to claim a Class A exemption, you need to speak with the council again and see if you qualify.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

I don't think I qualify for the Class A... Alot of the rooms are now decorated. Just no bathroom really... Looks like I need to pay up :(
