Overpaid Tax - how do I get it back?

Hi,

I'm new to this and not sure if this has been covered before but I need some help!

I have received a bonus from my company and as this was paid in the 1st tax month I have paid 40% tax. My normal salary would not take me into this tax bracket and the tax office told me that each month I would basically get a refund.

Unfortunately I had counted on the money to do several things including pay off all my debts (credit cards). I now can't do this.

Is there any way of getting the money back now rather than each month?

I did call the Tax office and they said as my yearly salary did not fall in 40% bracket I would get a credit each month from the tax office as it was recalculated.

Looks like I'll just have to accept this.

Hi there

What the tax office have told you is correct. A refund will not be generated at the start of the tax year - only at the end if you have overpaid.

This is also dependent on you being on a cummlative tax code. If you are on W/M 1 this will not happen.
