hi. just wanted to post an update for those interested. yesterday i received an email from my banks executive office with 2 options about my £6000 worth of debt remaining. option 1 was the bank would suspend any action on my debt for 3 months to allow me time to recover from my injury and sort out my finances. option 2 pay £500 as a full and final settlement of the debt and have the remainder written off. i obviously went with option 2 and was lucky enough to be able to borrow the money from my grandmother who was more than willing to help me out. for the first time in almost 9 years i am debt free. as of today the balance was written off. i cant describe how good it feels. when i have worked out all of the figures, i have paid back exactly what i borrowed and have not paid any interest on that. my bank natwest/rbs were extremely understanding about my situation and kept in close contact with me. i obviously had to provide proof of my injury and financial situation, but once i did they were more than willing to help. I think it also was in my favor that i have always tried to pay at least something towards clearing my debt. and that i have gone to the trouble to get in touch with a debt management company to sort it out. I will add this also, when i beleived my debt had gone already a few weeks ago, i informed stepchange by email that i thought it had been written off, i got a very snotty reply basically saying that it was impossible and the only situation that would happen, is if i was dying......well that was incorrect information, i am not dying but my bank have written off £6000. Im not saying this will be the case for anyone who writes a letter asking for it to be written off, but in some circumstances its always a good idea to ask.

Im now going to try and concentrate on building my credit history up and never taking out a loan i cant afford again. from now i the lesson i have learned is if i want something expensive, its best to save up for it and work for it.

good luck to everyone on here, and thanks for all the advice from posts i have read over the last 8 years. the info on here is priceless.

You are exactly correct, and stepchange need to learn this if they are genuinely going to act in the best interests of their clients.

thanks. i actually wrote a letter about 5 years ago before i discovered cccs (now stepchange) as i was i a real pickle with my finances and asked for a write off. but i never got the courage to send it. it sat in my glove box up until last week when i binned it after sending the email asking for a write off. who knows maybe i could have had it written off all that time ago. i never thought id get rid of this debt. i was sure it would be with me until my debt free date of 2017. i wont beleive it until i look at my credit file when it updates on noddle in a few days.
