As jem16 predicted - nothing to worry about for that year. I don't suppose you have the P2 for the previous code for this tax year?

So somewhere along the line you had a tax underpayment for an earlier year or years of £636.60 and HMRC has collected this by increasing your tax for the current year. Presumably you will have been notified of this underpayment.

I had to laugh at that but you are not alone and my March it will have cleared.

It underlines the point that you believed HMRC to be correct both in the year that you were 'overpaid' and the year that you were underpaid, and why would you not? But you really must query any such discrepancies. A young girl who is a neighbour came to see me last year with two P800 forms for 2009/10 and 2010/11 - her underpayment was almost £2000. It transpire that a summer job with the local council was the primary reason. No tax had been deducted . However HMRC had included her earnings for 2007/08, 2008/09 and 2009/10 all in 2009/10 year! To appeal she had to fill in an SA return (don't ask - I can't get her off SA now!) with the result that she now owes £700. If it look odd, it probably is!

So did you have an underpayment for around £630?
