in Cutting tax
Hi All,
Not sure if im in the right area.
Last year when I was in between jobs and sorting out my finances I rang the HMRC tax office to enquire about a refund for overpaying tax. To my relief I was told for the previous year I had over paid and was also due a refund for this tax year too. I was informed that I would not here about my refund from the previous year til around October. October came and I got a cheque from HMRC for £75, great I thought! I was also expecting the other refund which i was told about.
Then in December, in my pay from my new job I got a refund of around £700 in total over 3 weeks. Since I was expecting a refund I thought nothing of it, great in time for xmas, paid some debts off too. Everything was great, nothing strange to see on my next 5 weeks of pay slips, correct tax code, paying tax etc. Mid January I noticed that for 2 weeks I had not paid tax though my tax code was still correct. I spoke with work who then told me to ring HMRC. I have just came off the phone to them and they have stated that I should not have received the refund I got and for some reason they had not got my income from my previous job. I asked well why was I paying tax til 2 weeks ago and informed I was due a refund? In basic terms she stated that next tax year I will have to pay it all back for an error on there grounds.
After struggling for 10yrs with £15000 of debt and being forced out of a well paid job 2 years ago to now having a decent job again, I have paid off most of my debt to now owing just £1300. Ive struggled for years being on the verge of break down. Ive turned my life around but now I have to pay £700 back for there mistake. Why was I told I would get 2 refunds?
Can anyone advise me please!
Regards CraigB

tax is all about detail
maybe they are right and maybe not but without any details it's impossible to say.0 -
what details? they had all the details, they worked out I was getting a refund.... I dont know anything about tax or how its worked out. I just trusted that the HMRC knew what they was doing and i believed what they said.0

HMRC sometimes get it all wrong
if you wish to post up all the figures we could check whether they are correct or not0 -
Don't get angry, get it right.
CLAPTON is just asking for details so that he can help you.
What has your salary been, what are your tax codes, how much tax have you paid?0 -
my tax code is 816L, I was paying around £35 a week in tax from this new job I started in October. My 1st rebate was when I was on a take home pay of £1500 a month back in 10/11. I was then on job seekers for 3 month with various agency working and Job seekers allowence. From then I worked part time earing £800 a month til Oct this year when I went full time. I have remain on the same tax code through out.0

tax is about detail
go through your figures and post up the figures for 2011-12

taxcode
if you had several jobs or received JSA then give the details

Well after fighting with the HMRC about me owing them tax due to there double error, i have been told I will be paying it back over 2014-2015 tax year. Thats extra nearly 90 per month on tax. Does anyone know of any organisation who could try and fight for me?0
