With regard to St Patrick's Day and 12th, it is straight forward. The patron saints' days are not public holidays in the UK (St George's day etc not taken) except in NI where te patron saint day is taken basically because we like to do things differently here. Or probably more likely we just love our public holidays.

In England and Wales there are 8 Public Holidays, Scotland has 9, but we have 10. In fact many people get more than this. eg. Christmas Eve, 13th of July and also if you are in the North West there is the first Monday in August. So depending on where you live, you could have 13 Public Holidays. BTW in RoI there are 9. So up to 13 public holidays in NI compared with a maximum of 9 elsewhere in Uk and ireland.

10 is too many and when did 13 July become a public holiday (only in the public sector). I'd get rid of Easter Tuesday for a start as it probably tends to encourage absenteeism during the rest of the week. If St Patrick's Day and 12 July are to be retained then one of the May bank holidays should go as well as Boxing Day which is not a public holiday anywhere in Europe but the British Isles.
In any case what's the point of having large numbers of people congesting the same destinations on public holidays. Why not abolish them altogether and add the days on to holiday entitlements. Few self-employed people pay attention to bank holidays unless they have to.
