inequality in job application process

I heard once about someone who had a pile of applications, split them into two, and binned one half saying 'these people are unlucky'. It was given as an example of something which really doesn't seem fair, but is actually legal because it is about treating all the applications in the same way....
OP - sorry you didn't get it, but I think you need to move on. It's tough out there at the moment, unfortunately!0 -
I don't believe the approach taken as described by the OP really breaches any public sector equality policy (and I've read a few of these policies). Unless it can be proven that the HR team rejected the application because of something which is a protected characteristic in employment law then it's not a question of equality. It's a question of fairness, and that is not, unfortunately, something that employers are legally obliged to be in every situation.current debt as at 10/01/11- £12500

thanks for all your replies...in short.
Yes i am confident of the CV attachment, it was stipulated in the guidelines to be attached within the application with a format on how it should read.
yes there were quite an amount of applications for the post.
yes it was externally advertised
at present the CC roles are protected, this is a new project with protected govt funding.
at best, i am going to pen a complaint and move on because whats the point of having an equal opportunities policy if they do not practice it?
Many thanks for your replies
I think you have missed the point regarding Equal Opportunities. The Act covers Age; Disability; Gender Reassignment; Marriage and Civil Partnerships; Pregnancy and Maternity; Race; Religion and Belief; Sex; Sexual Orientation. It doesn't cover 'people who are doing the same job as you'.
It's annoying when these sort of things happen, but I would reiterate my earlier post, just move on.0 -
If they use a HRIS system they dont have to even read the CVs, If I had 500 applications for a role I can click one button and it goes through all the applications and pulls out the top ten for me based on the criteria I set when I put the job role in the system.
I can press another button, enter a date range and invite them to interview usually these days I read a CV the morning the candidate come in for first interview.
Actually I can understand people being pee-d off if they have to spend a couple of hours writing reams of stuff that is never even going to be glanced at by a human being. It takes hours to do a decent application properly.0 -

Think it's a public sector attitude of everything must be "fair".
Bit like primary school.0 -

Rita - please start a new thread, and don't hijack this one. I notice you have posted the same thing in three different threads, which makes me suspect you may just be building your post count. I apologise if I am wrong, but posting the same thing repeatedly won't endear you to anyone on this forum!
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -

It's not a view, it's a public sector duty, they have to comply with these rules which are set by the EHRC. There is a school of thought that says the duties are unfair and do not make any difference to the groups that are supposed to be protected.0 -
Are you sure about the cv aspect?
Public service employers tend to avoid cv's like the plague as they are unlikely to comply with anti-discriminatory best practise.
I work in the public sector and you always have to upload a CV as well as complete a long application. The last job I applied for wanted my entire work history instead of my CV. I submitted an (internal only) application, met all the criteria and it doesn't look I've been selected for interview. I'll be asking why.0
