Well here we go, after changing our initial plans of getting married we are finally getting around to doing it.
Lots of tantrums from my family when we changed our plans as we decided we wanted something small so we told them that our parents would get 3 weeks notice if we were going abroad, and one week if we were staying in the UK. We're going abroad.
I still have my original dress and accessories - I only hope it's not too warm for it in Italy as I'm not spending any more money on one!
Getting married in June in Italy, in the north (not putting exact location, sorry, as it may be obvious to some folk). Does anyone here have experience of marriage in Italy? How hard was it? Have been looking at various websites for advice but would love to hear about personal experiences. We are doing it all ourselves with the help of a friend out there and not using a tour operator...
The best thing is that OH was going to surprise me and organise it all, until he realised he doesn't know where any of our Important paperwork is and had to come clean with it all!
Excited muchly!!!

Ooooh how exciting!
My SIL got married in Italy 2011, at Malcesine Castle on Lake Garda. Beautiful ceremony in a beautiful setting :-)
I wasn't really involved in the planning with her, but I don't think it was too difficult to organise. She contacted the local wedding planner for the castle, who I'm guessing helped her with all the legal aspects of it. The ceremony was conducted by the town mayor I think, him speaking in Italian and a woman translating to English.
I know that the couple and their two witnesses had to be there a few days before the ceremony (3days I think?) to sign papers etc.
With regards to your dress, it depends on how big and heavy it is. We were there in May and it was really hot, my dress had three layers and I was sweating, never mind a full wedding dress :-/Can't think of anything smart to put here...0 -
Thanks. It is quite a big dress when it is on and I don't think it can be altered too much that way. I am needing it shortened anyway so will ask advice when I'm getting that done.
We arrive on a Monday evening and hope to get married on Wednesday (anytime) or Thursday morning. Hoping our friend in Italy will agree to being a witness and the other probably won't arrive in from Switzerland (or UK depending) until Tuesday or Wednesday morning! Not easy!
I've sent a huge list of questions out to Italy.....No longer ...tobe! Married 20/06/13MFW 2021 #117 £5415.40/£6000MFW 2022 #77 £3740/£3000MFW 2023 #82 £0/£30000 -

I was born and raised in Northern Italy. Went to many weddings and they have great celebrations. Hope your friend over there can be of help. The people will all be very helpful, of that you can be sure. Congratulations on your forthcoming marriage.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
How lovely!! We got married in Positano in April 2010 as we wanted a quiet ceremony. I paid a wedding planner who specialised in Italian weddings. She was based in Belfast but was Italian herself and she sorted everything; paperwork, booking the town hall, interpreter, musicians, flowers, photographer. All of that cost us £1400. We had to go to the town hall to sign some paperwork before the ceremony and had to send a certificate of no impediment (which we got from our local registry office after our banns had been read) beforehand.
Ceremony was very relaxed on the town hall balcony overlooking the sea. The mayor read out the service and the interpreter repeated it in English. We really loved it as it suited us perfectly.
My dress was 50's style heavy satin with lace overlay and a huge petticoat. Temperature was early 20s and I was comfortable.
Good luck with your wedding0 -
Yay!!! Confirmed the time and date with the wedding hall! My friend out in Italy who is acting as our co-ordinator has got it booked for us, is booking the same photographer as she used for her own wedding, a friend of hers is doing my hair (unsure yet if we are going to the salon or if she is coming to me - 100 euros difference in the price but will be very tight for time as it is an 11am wedding and salon is 10km away), making my own crystal bouquet which is started, dress is away for alterations (probably would be cheaper buying another as it doesn't fit now but I still love it so I'm having it!), forms ready to be printed off to send to the registrar next week, and a birth certificate to find - that's tomorrow nights job!
Not having cars, cake, musicians, flowers, etc. Keeping it very simple.
Our friend is also being the interpreter for us, she has confirmed that she can do this, and she is also being one of the witnesses! There will be lots of people we know in the area when we get married so just need to find out if one of them is available the day before.
Oh - we finally told our parents aswell, I was put under pressure until I had to. Got Dad's blessing to do it this way but he can't make it, Mum wanted to try and come but realised it was going to cost too much and said she'd just give us money instead, and OH parents were shocked even though they have said before just to go and do it!!!! I think in the harsh reality when they were told they were actually upset and annoyed that we have decided to do it this way! A few select others are aware aswell but right now, it is just exaclty as we want it!
