Well of course I don't go to the Denture Clinic for the dental care of my existing teeth and gums - my own dentist does that twice a year.

Why would I expect a Denture Specialist to do that? I simply get them to make a good quality top plate at a reasonable cost which they do very skillfully. I'm very satisfied with the service that I receive - much more than with some dentists who've wreaked havoc on my molars......

But there is no such thing as a 'denture specialist' in this country.

He is an illegally operating denture technician.

He can dress it up however he likes, but he is operating outside the law (The Dentist Act 1984)

Of course he can operate at a 'reasonable cost'.

He ain't paying tax, he ain't paying any professional insurance, he ain't paying any registration fees, he can pick and choose what cross infection control to use as he doesn't have any 'standards' to comply with.

If I was allowed to set up a market stall, and hide all the cash under the matress - I could offer you a REALLY cheap and very decent set of plastic gnashers.

How illegal do you want to go for 'value for money'?
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Yep. I'll go there for a well fitting denture, thanks.

I admire you for standing up for your profession ,though. It's a shame more dentists aren't as honorable as yourself, when it comes down to quality and
    financial gain.

    It's a two way street.

For illegal practice to be stamped out you need patients/consumers to act honorably and put the law above their own financial interests as well.

I would suggest, rather than "stamping it out", (How Pompous!) - more should be opened and "Legalised" which would give us all more choice when in comes to dentures....I'm off now - I've said my piece.

That would work too - but if it was legal, and regulated like we are, and tax paid etc - the price would go up!

    Hi Savvy Sue

You mentioned a Health Board in your thread. Could you tell me how I access that, please?

    Many thanks.

    It's here

But if you click on the 'Chat Forums' bit on the left at the top of the pages, you get a whole load of other subjects.

The Health & Beauty board is tucked in with the 'Marriage Relationships and Family' board.
