Tax Returns
1step-at-a-time

I was due to submit my Apr 2011 - Apr 2012 tax return by 31/01/13. When I went to do it towards end of last month I couldn't log in despite having all my old details and the helpline resent login information and said to file by 15th February.
However, I'm actually not sure if I am now meant to submit for this period as it is the financial year prior to being made bankrupt..? (I went BR October 2012)
I'm happy to do it, but have yet to receive the new login information and it took 30 mins last time on hold, so if I'm not actually required to file for pre-BR returns would rather not have another large period on hold to HMRC.
Does anyone know the answer to this? It would be a nil return, but doubt that makes any difference to the situation.

That year will have been included in your bankruptcy, so no you do not have to do it. 2012/13 will also be included. You should get a new SA ref no (UTR) for 2013/14 and your next tax return is due 31 January 2015.0

Thank you! Saves me another 30minutes of wasted time to HMRC, if only they knew their own policies

The link you have given includes this,
For the year of bankruptcy all income is all declared on the tax return issued from the pre-bankruptcy SA record. A tax return for the year of bankruptcy should not be issued from the post-bankruptcy SA record. However, tax returns for the years following the year of bankruptcy should be issued from the post-bankruptcy record.
Why have you advised OP not to bother with pre bankruptcy tax return? Where does it say a return isn't needed?0 -
OR told me not to bother, they did them.0

OR told me not to bother, they did them.
In which case shouldn't 1step-at-a-time check that their OR is doing the return on their behalf rather than simply not doing it?
Otherwise 1step could end up with a fine if a there is no return submitted.
Personally I would rather waste my time and do a return that's not needed than risk an HMRC fine.

Agree, but the HMRC link states it can not be done online and a manual return must be issued. A fine can only arise when the return is not submitted by the later of 31 January following tax year end and three months after return issued - so if no return issued, no fine.0

Just to say that I ended up speaking with HMRC again on another matter and they also confirmed I can't submit a return as my UTR will have been changed. Thanks for the help on it all

Perhaps they've changed the rules but with my BR I had to do a manual return for the BR tax year(all tax due included in BR...yippee!). Like OP I wasn't allowed to tie up the loose ends online but I was able to re-register for the following year with my new UTR.0
