Bank accounts and rebuilding credit score

We are struggling with this too. We were discharged in Nov 2011, and have had a LOT of credit card 'offers.' My hubby applied for one in October and was refused, and I tried to get a catalogue account and was refused. Our credit files are all sorted and we have paid every last thing up to date ever since bankruptcy, and yet we seem to be entitled to nothing, even two and a quarter years after the bankruptcy. We can't even get anything more than a 'basic' bank account. The bank simply says 'sorry, your credit score doesn't measure up.' We have actually given up now.

In your OP you mention a "vantage" card but don`t mention a Vanquis one, if you had I would not have recommended Vanquis.
Your credit score will mean diddly squat whilst your BR is on your CF.
changed my original quote just to be correct :rotfl::A
  • Im trying to rebuild my score because its what i need to do. If you state that your score means nothing while the BR is on your credit file then whats the point of cleaning your files immediately? Surely it doesn't take people 6 years to do this?

Secondly if you are already providing proof you are improving your score while the BR is showing then surely that helps with getting a mortgage while the BR shows on your credit file???? Ive read posts which say some mortgage lenders look at 3 years from discharge ( i think that was what I saw last night) with x amount of deposit. Surely its better and it makes sense to start improving it as much as possible as soon as possible??

I think it took me 2 to 3 years after discharge to be accepted for it
Everyone's different though. It's not just the br. Everyone will have defaults , a different number and a different amount on each

keep trying every 6 months you will get there.

droiderm makes a good and valid point, often in these types of posts we always hear the BR but never the level of defaults, amounts, and any CCJs,number of searches all these will have a impact as will like all credit applications length at address, on the ER, time in there job, income etc.

I agree it took me nearly 2 years of applying for vanquis every 6-12 months before I got one.

Capital one secure card might be an option to try.

  • Barclays have recently relaxed their criteria for opening a full current account, so the customer service girl told me. i had a basic account with them during BR. 7 months after discharge and cleaning up my files they allowed me a full current account with cheque book:D

That's interesting news .. I've had my Barclays basic account for coming up for 3 years now so I might see if they'll 'upgrade' me.

..everyone else has told me to jog on.
