anyone got a waffle maker ? help

I have purchased a waffle maker today as the kids love them.

Anyone got a fool proof basic recipe and the best way to use it ? As in how long, how high ? I have been mixing and trying to make them most of the afternoon. They are either not cooked in the middle, too soft , too hard and basically not very nice :o

Any help much appreciated x

  • my bf has one, and when i can talk him into it he'll make me waffles. he just uses a pancake mixture, one with eggs. im not sure of the recipe, but his mum is american so she gave him it.

might be worth looking for an american recipe? think allrecipes is an american based site. sorry not much help really! :( hope you find it.
(also was there not a recipe book in with the waffle maker?)
  • I've got a lakelnd one - the recipe on the box is too thick but their website someone had suggested using the hairy bikers recipe - worked a treat - just google it - best results pour mixture in from a jug !

Thanks bargain hunter, will look for that recipe to , i love the hairy bikers :)

Think i will try it and make mixture thinner as mine was thick. I got it in lidil today it was only 10 pound. x

  • This is the recipe I use from the Rachel Allen Cookbook, usually cook them on high for about 6 minutes (longer than it says). Do not overfill waffle maker just cover so you cant see sticking up squares as they rise alot. Also make sure you oil plates each time with sunflower oil and a pastry brush between each lot of waffles, never clean the plates with water or anything just wipe over. HTH :)

THIS is the recipe I use all the time - I've tried lots and this is my favourite. Not normally a fan of cup measurements but this isn't too bad! Whisking the egg whites and folding then in makes the waffles lovely and light (you can also use this recipe to make really nice, light pancakes).

I just have the waffle iron on the highest temperature and for thin Belgian-style waffles I suppose this takes about 4 minutes, a bit longer for the thicker type. I use an oil spray to grease it although when I forget they don't really tend to stick anyway.

My parents have been using this Marguerite Patten one for 30 years - even I can't mess it up too badly. Every now and then dad tries a new recipe they never work as well as this one. He does 2 mins each side total on a medium heat - flipping it a few times. The first one is usually a mess and then the rest come out well. I've even made it with wholewheat spelt with success. I always use an electric whisk to grt it smooth. Enjoy! I want waffles now....

    Sorry it's in old weights!

    4oz plain flour
    Pinch salt
    1 egg
    1/3 pint milk
    1oz melted margarine
    1oz sugar

Sift together flour and salt. Make a well and drop in the egg. Beat the batter thoroughly, gradually adding the milk to make a smooth thick batter. Mix in the melted margarine and sugar.
