in a Tizz over Tax

hello

i've had a look at some of the threads & at the IR site but i don't know where to start.

i'm interested in discovering if i can claim a tax rebate for the year to end of March 07.

i started a new job in Feb 2007, & had been on Income Support & Job Seekers Allowance for the rest of the year. My total benefit income was only £790 though! [separate issue - i have written so many letters & tried to involve my MP all to no avail].

since i started work again i've been paying 'normal' tax & was kind of hoping that i'd get an automatic rebate but so far i haven't.

i owe my brother £5000 & would love to have a boost, although i know everything will sort itself out eventually as i bank a good [by my standards!]regular income.

any advice or pointers?

Mel

When you get your P60 phone HMRC with those figures and ask them about a possible rebate. Now that we are into a new tax year it won't be automatic.

Yes you will. You should get it by the end of this month.

Do you have the figures from your March payslip and the tax code you were on?

Did the DWP give you a P45 when you started work?

If you can post the figures I can give you an idea to what your rebate will be :)

    wow thanks tigtag

    from MARCH payslip:

    2080.84 NI'able earnings
    2008.02 Taxable pay
    3519.35 Tax Year
    327.85 Tax Paid
    1512.51 Net Pay

Tax code shows as 503L 1 whereas it showed as BR on my Feb payslip.

hope this is enough info from the payslips..

yes i was sent a P45 which shows my tax code as 503L with X [for Week 1 Month 1] at week 44, & my taxable benefit shows as £796.10.

    Hi Mel
BR in Feb means that you weren’t given any allowances and taxed on everything you earnt that month at 22%

By March it looks like they have either processed your P45 or you have filled out a P46. The *1* means that when you are taxed only that payment only and that your earnings in the pervious year are not taken into consideration.

    If this figures:
    3519.35 Tax Year
    327.85 Tax Paid
are the totals of your salary, tax, etc then you have overpaid tax by £327.85. (That includes your *earnings* from the DWP)

Once you receive your P60 from your place of employment send it (take a copy, they lost OH’s last year!) to HMRC along with a short letter asking them to calculate any overpayment. You should receive a nice cheque in the post :):)

If you paid any tax on bank or building society interest in the year you can try and get some of that back too. Tax man will need copies of the interest certificates

no i didn't! i clawed myself out of debt & paid off O/D, AND claimed back charges! this site is unbelievable!!

but i did pay tax in February as well as March. £322.42. would i be able to claim this back also?

Earlier you mentioned totals from your March payslip.

    2080.84 NI'able earnings
    2008.02 Taxable pay
    3519.35 Tax Year
    327.85 Tax Paid
    1512.51 Net Pay

Was the tax paid of £327.85 just for March or for the whole year? Your March payslip should contain the tax figures for the whole year as well as just for March.

    Can you clarify this?
