Claiming back tax on rail travel to work?

If you look at the very top of the form P87, you will see a space to complete the tax year that the form relates to. So if you expect to incur further allowable expenses in the tax year to 5 April 2013, then I would wait until after 5 April to make your claim.
Obviously if you have incurred such expenses in previous tax years, you can claim them now. You should make a separate claim for each tax year, and for each employment within the tax year for which you have incurred expenses.
The travel expenses should be included in Section 4. Section 2 is only for expenses associated with using your own vehicle, including business mileage.
The form does specifically state that you should NOT send paperwork (e.g. tickets) with it. HMRC will contact you if they need more info to process claim.November 2007 £570k 25 years - MF March 2033

Do be sure that you keep those tickets for at least six years. HMRC should ask to see copies of them in less time than that if they want to but it's best to keep them for at least six years.0

Thanks You very much for Your answers.
So just to summarize it. For the fiscal year ( 04.2012 04.2013 ) i will put all my expense and claim it. Later expenses I can only claim next year which will be 04.2014 ??
As I understood I can claim whole ticket price for the journey from London to Swindon as on the ticket? I cannot split it and count it for just the distance from Reading to Swindon?
and last question
If You claiming miles what You have to provide to the revenue? Receipts for gas station or show them how many miles You drove?? How does it work?

If you are claiming tax relief on business mileage, you should keep a mileage log showing distance travelled and the date of the journey. The rate for the first 10,000 miles in a tax year is 45p per mile, and 25p per mile thereafter. The mileage allowance that you receive tax relief on is designed to cover fuel costs, maintenance etc, so you do NOT claim separately for fuel purchased etc.
HMRC should be happy with a mileage log if they investigate your claim, but they may of course request further proof of journeys travelled if they wish to.
I have already answered re: claiming full cost of train travel from London to Swindon.
And yes, you can claim now for the tax year 6/4/11 - 5/4/12, but will need to wait until after 5th April 2013 to make a claim for 6/4/12 - 5/4/13.November 2007 £570k 25 years - MF March 2033
