If the company only pays Statutory sick then they are not allowed to insist on any contact outside of the notification and production of the doctors note, however, if they pay Company sick pay which is over SSP they can ask - although their requirements do seem OTT!0

thanks for all the helpful replies. He tried to contact the boss today, he wasn't answering so he ended up talking to one of the area managers (level above his boss ) who said he didn't need to phone as they had received a sick note that covers him until next week.
Silly dad then covered for his boss and said he had made a mistake and thought it was company policy that he had to phone everyday.0
