Another bankruptcy question!!

Hi All

I posted on this almost 6 years ago to ask your advice on bankruptcy.

Anyway, In October 2007 I was declared bankrupt. Had no assets, lived at home, and finally was free from debt.

6 years on... I have a bank account, a debit card, a credit card (which I must stress I am only using to try to rebuild my credit score - I pay it off in FULL every month), and have never gone overdrawn with my bank account.

I am currently living with my fiance, in his house. He has a mortgage. However, some time later in the year we would like to enquire about the possibility of me getting a mortgage (either added to his, or possibly a new mortgage between the two of us). Either way, I would like to have ownership of a house... am in my mid-thirties and think that it is something that is necessary considering I am working full time, earning around £25, 000. I am currently on maternity leave, baby due end of feb, and will be off work until Jan 2014.

Question - do you think nationwide will give me a mortgage? Myself and my partner have a joint account, opened in November past, but one of the questions asked when applying was 'are you bankrupt'. I would not question hiding this fact as I am open and honest about it, although she selected 'yes' due to my previous bankruptcy, and the account was declined to have my name as the lead name. We therefore put it with my partners as the main name, and all was ok.

Sorry about the long post.. hoping someone can advise. Bankruptcy was October 2007!

  • Also... the girl who worked in Nationwide told me to enquire as to whether I currently AM bankrupt... and was it necessary to select yes?? the question wasn't 'have you previously been bankrupt', so therefore I may NOT have had to answer 'yes' to the bankruptcy question, if I am not currently classed as a bankrupt? As I said, I never will try to hide or be dishonest about my bankruptcy.... it was something that has helped me out a great deal but also taught me a valuable lesson!

If it asked "have you previously been bankrupt" then you would have to answer yes. As you have.

If it asked if you "are currently bankrupt" or "are you an undischarged bankrupt" then you could answer no.

From what you have said was asked, the first of those 2 would apply.
