I'm after

Distilled Vinegar (aka white vinegar), Cream of Tartar and Baking Soda. Anyone know where the best place to get these from, I need rather large amounts but I don't mind if I have to open 500ml bottle after 500ml bottle.

I'd ask for lemon juice as well, but I don't use that in quite so much quantity.

Here's what I've found so far if anyone's particularly interested.

£0.48 (84.5 p/L) - ASDA Distilled Vinegar

£4.34 per kg - Bicarbonate of Soda Ebay swiftbuys234

£12.99 per kg - Tartar Ebay indiabazaar-online

Chinese Supermarkets have all these in bulk sizes, some Indian and Bangladeshi may have .

    Chinese,

White Vinegar around £2 per 5 litres
    Sodium Bicarbonate £3 - £4 per 3 kilo bag
Cream of tartar not sure but around £5 -£6 a kilo by memory.
  • Assuming this is for use as cleaning products it is considerably cheaper to buy acetic/ethanoic acid (readily available online) & dilute it yourself. Assuming you purchase Glacial Acetic acid which is 99.85% pure you would dilute it in a 19:1 solution (5ml acid to 95ml water) to replicate a typical white vinegar which is 5% acid.

If you do this then make sure you read and follow all the safety guidance in the msds documents companies selling acetic acid provide as it can potentially be quite hazardous.
  • Shammyjack,
I'll take a look at where my local chinese supermarket is. I'm in south wales, so this should be quite the challenge. However if you can find online prices for that much I'd love to find out. Unfortunately I don't have a car so I need delivery :(

    Aptly named for someone who goes just that bit further to save a penny! I had no idea about that. I am really starting to wonder whether it was worth going to school. I will absolutely look into that as it is primarily for cleaning, I prefer malt vinegar to eat ^-^;

  • £1.95 for 5L of white vinegar from wing yip if you don't have a Chinese supermarket near you obviously delivery charges need to be factored in to the overall cost too though.

If diluting actic acid then the strongest I would suggest for cleaning is a 12.5% solution. A 20% solution is equivalent to horticultural vinegar which is a very effective weedkiller favoured by organic gardeners.

Not everything I learnt at school can be applied to the real world, my chemistry teacher used to let me make erm er.... fireworks is probably the best description. I once had a 15 foot square 18 inch thick slab of concrete to remove in the garden & decided to apply the same thing I learnt to remove it, worked brilliantly & incredibly quick but had to spend several hours explaining myself in the police station later that day & they contacted a company I used to use regularly & requested that they no longer sell me anything.

Interesting, if I buy 20L worth of the stuff, it does work out cheaper than the Asda home brand, even with the delivery charge... or so it seems.

*Laughs* That sounds like my ideal chemistry teacher. Unfortunately, they won't let anyone near the black stuff...

    Edit.

ARRRRRGGGHHH verified by visa...geh. Asked them if they'll accept paypal/gwallet instead.

  • The bicarb currently seems to be cheapest on amazon £24.82 incl delivery for 25kg.

Can't see cream of tartar cheaper online though.
