Release of house deeds

I recently paid off my mortgage and had to pay an additional £50 to get my deeds back or they would be destroyed. I paid the money but surely this can't be fair, ie. £50 just to retrieve my deeds from my file and then post them.
Does anyone know the legality of this ridiculously high charge?

If the property is registered at land registry then your deeds have only historic interest, so let the lender destroy them.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Who was the lender out of interest? The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0
