Non perishable packed lunch?

Options
My son is going for a weekend away with scouts and he needs a packed lunch for on the way there tomorrow and also for on the way back Sunday!

Does anyone have any ideas past crisps/crackers/biscuits/fruit? I am stumped :)

Thanks in advance x

  • How about one of those tuna salads you can get in the foil trays? They're long life and tasty and they have a fork/spoon thingy in the lid.
Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and adventure.

Thank you, great idea but he despises tuna!
  • Dried fruit, cereal bars, cheese biscuits.
My son has been right through the scouts from beavers and I would expect them to provide lunch for the return journey. Are you sure you are expected to send 2 packed lunches?
I went to camp as a parent helper and the children ate extremely well. They certainly didn't go hungry.
Are they staying under canvass? Any food is usually confiscated as it encourages little furry visitors.

Pepperamis, send him with frozen sausage roll. It would be fine come Sunday.

Cereal bars, ripe at home fruit.

    My thoughts:
Cheddar sliced and wrapped in foil or in a plastic box, to go with the crackers/oatcakes/crispbread.
Individual pots of rice pudding/custard to replace yoghurt.
    Apples/oranges/dried fruit.
Long life fruit juice in cartons.

I like the idea of freezing the more perishable elements of the food for the journey back - it should stay reasonably fresh in a little cooler bag, especially if there is a frozen drink in with the food, and should stop him eating it all on the way there. Cheese and/or ham can be frozen in a sandwich or roll, as well as the suggestion you had above for a frozen sausage roll.

Otherwise, he will be fine with plenty of snacky bits like crisps, popcorn, dried fruit, cereal bars, biscuits, chocs etc. If they are eating on the journey home, the food will be as much for entertainment as to fill them up, so lots of little bits and small treats he can space out to fill the time will be good, as well as a big bottle of drink with a top that he can re-seal rather than a juice box which is difficult to keep part of for later. A big bag of something to share will probably also be popular - popcorn is relatively healthy if homemade and not smothered in butter!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
  • my kids are in Explorers, Scouts and Cubs so often need a packed lunch to last all day, particularly when on the long hikes. Think healthy snacks, finger foods, cheese scones, bananas and high energy bars to keep them going! Daughter loves chopped up concentrated jelly cubes, fruit flakes, as they're easy to nibble at whilst hiking on. Think hydration too! For more ideas, check out my blog... Let me know what your dream packed lunch is too x
