Halifax failed to close my account at my request

PLEASE HELP..ANY SUGGESTIONS.
Last November I decided to move banks so went into my local branch of the Halifax to close with them.
In all good faith thinking my account was closed I was surprised to get a letter from them 3 months later. It appears that 2 months after the account was closed by me, the Halifax made a card payment to a company that I had previously had dealings with some time ago.It seems the Halifax honoured a card payment request from that company even though my account had been closed by me and I did not want to make this payment to the company as I no longer required their services. The halifax are pestering me for the £150 payment even though I have been into the branch and spoken to the manager on several occasions. The manager reassures me that she will sort it, then I get another phone call, another letter. They are now adding interest and I am frightened that I will be put on a credit black list.
I am so fed up with this, but on principle I don't feel I should pay. I am temped to write to them and tell them to take me to court.
Anybody had a similar thing happening to them ? ? ?

I had similar with the halifax but they stuck to their guns on the basis that I should have cancelled all direct debits with the companies concerned.
They apparently were waiting for me to go into the branch to close the account because it is a joint account, but it has to all intents and purposes been closed for about a year now!

What service have you been charged for? When you sign up for services that expire after a year (magazine subscriptions, insurance or breakdown cover, TV licence, etc.), the company will set up a Continuous Payment Authority, which means that you have given them the right to keep taking payments until you tell them to cancel it. If the company does this, they should make it clear when you sign up, but not many of them do.
The Halifax are right, it is your responsibility to contact the company and tell them to cancel the service. Closing your credit card isn't enough to stop future CPA payments. When I closed a credit card recently, they sent me a letter telling me that they would still make these payments unless I contacted the companies and cancelled the CPAs.
Have you tried contacting the company who charged you, saying that you did not want to continue the subscription, and asking them to refund the money to the credit card?
