Thanks for your informative post. I've decided that I'll suggest to my bro. to see someone from London & Country. They're whole of market and fee free.
Incidentally, bro. will only need the one mortgage if he can raise £180k on the bungalow as he'll then be able to buy the new place outright. Surely this is the cheapest and most tax efficient way to do it?

I can't say anything about L&C but be cautious of fee free advisers, as there may be a tendency to only consider and recommend a lender with the highest proc (commission) fee as oppossed to the best deal.
Yes it may make financial sense to pch the main residence in this manner due to the permitted offsetting (if he and the property meet the lenders cirteria of course), but please ensure that your bro obtains independent financial advice and guidance on this from his financial and tax advisor.
