Council tax bill for a old rentshare

I need some help. I just recevieved two council tax bills for a old property that I used to live in. They are asking in total for about £2000 for 31/1/2010 to 14/1-2012.
The problem is that it was a flatshare and I only rented one room (all bills incl.).. AND moved out on 4/1/2011.. My name was never on any bills (or contract) and i paid rent cash every month.
I will give them a call later today about it, but would like to hear some opinions from you first. How should I best adress it? What should I look out for?

Tell them you believe it was a House In Multiple Occupation (as you only rented a room) for that period and that as such under legislation the owner is liable for any council tax due. The query can then proceed from there.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
