I wouldnt worry too much about being told to arrive early as long as you are starting work on time, id be more worried about not getting your break.

How long does it take to set up? It could take 5 mins or 15 mins but as long as your OH is set up and ready to go dead on time I can't see how the manager can fault him.

    .

Doesn't matter how long it takes to set up, if one has to set something up to do the job then it is part of the working hours.

He's on min wage, but the manager justified it by saying that everyone *should* be earning bonus so they should get more than min..

As others have said, possibly unlawful.

This manager has simply justified it to himself as he knows no better obviously.

He's no doubt just a jumped up phone caller himself trying to impress with results.

    Hello,

I was hoping someone could advise. My OH works in a call centre. He's been there for 3 years. Earlier this week the manager decided that he wants staff in 15 minutes earlier than their shift start. They are not required to work. I understand someone asked in the meeting about what happens if they don't come in earlier. They were told they can either come in early or leave. Can they ask this?

I know it's only 15 mins but there are already days where he loses his 15 min break due to 'high call volume' etc, so he can't go/ or doesn't get time to go as it is.

    Thank you.
3 years...wow that's a long time in a call centre. He'll probably be one of the longest serving employees there.

Boss can ask that people try and arrive 15 minutes before in time to go toilet, get coffee, gossip then sit down at desk to be ready to hit the logon button but boss can't ask you to do anything before then without pay.

What 15 minute break is this? A lunch break is supposed to be a minimum of 20 minutes spent away from the place of work. The time starts from when you leave your workspace and finishes when you arrive back. The time taken to log in to the system is part of working time. aLthough during lunch most people would hit the busy button and lock their workstations rather than turning everything off so it should only take a few seconds to log back in. You do not need to arrive 30 seconds earlier to log on. Most companies allow 30 minutes unpaid lunch break to avoid any confusion.
