P800t

I recently received a P800T telling me I have £300 underpaid tax which will be collected in the coming Tax Year on a new Code.

I'm PAYE and have a Co. Car for my job (for over 20 years).

About 18 months ago and out of the blue HMRC suddenly removed my car benefit, issuing a new Tax Code at the time but without any explaination.

I overlooked this as it was around the time when basic rate tax was raised.

My latest P11D revealed that I should have been taxed all along, so they issued the P800T.

My point is they created the error and I have got them to admit this.

However they won't write the amount off.

Any ideas how best to proceed?

    I overlooked this.

Unfortunately HMRC will take the view that you should have contacted them to query the incorrect code at the time and in failing to bring the error to their attention at that time you allowed the underpayment to arise.
