Underpaid Tax because I didnt hand in P45

Hi All

I wonder if anyone out there can offer some advice. I have received a P800 stating that I owe £700. I have been informed that this is because when I changed jobs in 2010/2011, and 2011/2012, I changed jobs an failed to hand in my P45. Due to this I have apparently received some of my personal allowance twice.

I was not aware that I had to hand in a P45, but I have handed in P46's when changing jobs! Does anyone know if there is any way I can challenge this?

Thank you

The p45 is the continuity of your tax affairs between employers. The notes on the P45 clearly state that you should give your P45 parts 2 and 3 to your new employer. Did you not read these notes?

The P46 does not contain the tax information from your previous employer and should only be used in the absence of a P45.

No there isn't. You have not followed the correct procedure which is quite clearly laid out on your P45.
