Yep there is a free version, but we've been saying some people prefer the added benefits of the paid ones, wrong or right.

I wouldn't use Avast as my normal AV, in my experience, it's a bit intrusive, but as I say, it clears anything out on its scans, so I'd recommend it as there is a virus that the others cannot move.

I think they rated the ones with whole package better

    e.g this was top
MicrosoftSecurity Essentials for Windows 7 Sep 2011 score 84 %

    Anti-malware 5 stars
    Email monitoring 5 stars
    Firewall 5 stars
    Identity Protection No stars
    Parental Controls 5 stars
    Back Up 5 stars
    Tune-up 5 stars
    Networking No stars
Total Performance Overall performance of the firewall and anti-malware features. 5 stars
    Online purchasing ease 5 stars
Ease of installing and uninstalling 5 stars
    Quality of reporting 4 stars
Total Ease of Use 5 stars
Features How many features and tools the software provides 5 stars

    Avast score 48%

    Anti-malware 4 stars
    Email monitoring 1 star
    Firewall No stars
    Identity Protection No stars
    Parental Controls No stars
    Back Up No stars
    Tune-up No stars
    Networking No stars
    Total Performance 4 stars
Online purchasing ease Marks are taken off for over the top efforts to upsell. 3 stars
Ease of installing and uninstalling 2 stars
    Quality of reporting 3 stars
Total Ease of Use 2 stars
    Features 3 stars

this is just the overview - the report states what they are looking for in each category and their were quite a few comments but I don't think I can reproduce here due to copyright - I can PM then to you. I was surprised as I'm pretty happy with Avast and I think I can trust PC PRO review more.

the things they are basing the ratings on are meaningless, and misleading. eg mse doesn't have a firewall, windows does, which is the same one you'd use alongside avast free. tune up/back up, what's that got to do with antivirus.

detection and performance and price are the most relevant things to judge an antivirus on, and avast beats mse and avg in those areas in any informed review I've seen.

  • Hi, help please, I'm an IT dunce and don't understand all the technical talk on here. I have been quoted £45 for one year to renew with Norton. I saw this deal and was going to go for it but I can't really figure out whether I should! In computer dunce terms please could you tell me if I should? Or do I renew with Norton? Or do I download a freebie and it will be ok? Thanks
